You may think of these tools as a way to get started, revise, or learn but not to create work entirely for assignments, papers, essays, posts, presentation slides, and so on. AI is more like your tutor or assistant, not a replacement for your independent and critical thinking.

Guidelines for the use of AI Tools:

Use it to extend and not replace your critical thinking.

Provide a clear and concise input prompt for the AI tool. This takes practice and is called “prompt engineering.”

Be sure to fact-check and evaluate the quality and correctness of the information.

Do not copy and paste AI generated material directly into your own work.

Use it to generate ideas, revise, and enhance your work; and most importantly, to learn throughout the process.

Be transparent about why and how you used an AI tool.

Be accountable. Do not missuse it. It is not meant to be a shortcut, or to replace originality.

Understand the limitations of the tool. It lacks insight, critical thinking, and creativity.

Cite everything you use from an AI tool, including anything you revised or paraphrased. See below for how to cite AI sources correctly

Understand the Basics

Before you start using AI generative text, ensure you have a solid understanding of the topic and the content you want to generate. AI can assist, but it’s essential to have content knowledge, so that you can engineer prompts correctly and efficiently.

Select a Suitable AI Model

Choose a reputable AI generative text model. Google’s Gemini is the approved AI tool at NC State. Always use your NC State Account to log in. While using Gemini data is protected and not used to train AI models, but this is only for non-sensitive data. Do not input sensitive data such as identifiers. For more information regarding Gemini and other AI tools, visit the Office of Information Technology page for the Gemini Chatbot

Documenting your use of AI is a must! Use the worksheet below to document your prompts, output, revisions, reflections, and more. You will need to upload this along with any work which you completed with the help of AI tools. As with any outside source, failure to document AI use is the same as not citing sources that you have used. It would be a violation of academic integrity.

    AI Use Documentation Worksheet

Key Elements for Citations and References

AI tools cannot account for accuracy, integrity, or originality. Citing text generated by AI properly is essential to maintain academic integrity and to acknowledge that you received AI help.

Regardless of the style, a complete AI citations and references should include these elements:

Author: The name of the AI model or the company that created it, for example OpenAI for ChatGPT or Google for Gemini.

Year: The year the output was generated.

Title/Description: A description of the prompt or the content generated, for example, Gemini output for “explain the Krebs cycle.”.

Version: The specific model version, for example GPT-4.

Note: It’s crucial to be transparent when using AI. It is considered good academic practice to also mention in your methodology or acknowledgements section that AI tools were used in the writing or research process, especially for drafting or generating content.

We will be using the Council of Science Editors (CSE) citation “Name-Year” Style

CSE considers AI material is personal communication. It is very important to insert in-text citations into your paper/work anywhere you have leaned on AI-generated material, just as you would any other outside source. Although, CSE does not yet have an official way to include the source in the reference section, you will need to include it in your AI Documentation Worksheet (see above to download it). If using Gemini, the

CSE Format for Citations and References Examples:

Name-Year Style

This style is common for citing published works and can be adapted for AI. The in-text citation includes the AI’s name and the year of generation, like (Google 2024). We will use an example from the Kreb’s cycle. For the in-text citation, if you include material from the response (output) you obtained from your prompt, you would write your version of it (never copy and paste into your own work), and then include the AI Tool and date you accessed the information

In-text citation: The Krebs cycle is a key part of cellular respiration, (Google 2024)

The full reference for a prompt about the Kreb’s cycle would look like this:

OpenAI. 2024. ChatGPT output for “explain the Krebs cycle”. GPT-4. OpenAI.

Google. 2024. Gemini output for “explain the Krebs cycle”.
