{"id":356,"date":"2025-02-04T14:45:32","date_gmt":"2025-02-04T14:45:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress-projects.wolfware.ncsu.edu\/coe-academic-affairs-student-staff\/?page_id=356"},"modified":"2026-04-24T18:40:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T18:40:40","slug":"chemistry","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wordpress-projects.wolfware.ncsu.edu\/first-year-engineering-student\/chemistry\/","title":{"rendered":"Chemistry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>All engineering degrees require the following chemistry courses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>CH 101&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8211; Chemistry I Lecture (3 credits)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CH 102<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Chemistry I Lab (1 credit)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You should be enrolled in a chemistry course for the fall semester unless you already have credit for chemistry (via qualifying AP\/IB scores or college transfer credit that has been submitted to NC State Admissions). If you are unsure about your credit, remain enrolled in CH 101\/102 until you are 100% certain you have credit, and that credit is showing in your Undergraduate Degree Audit in MyPack Portal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Placement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Students in the College of Engineering are required to take the Chemistry Placement Exam.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Details regarding the placement exam can be found at the following link: <a href=\"https:\/\/chemistry.sciences.ncsu.edu\/undergraduate\/advising-and-tutoring\/chemistry-placement-exam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chemistry Department &#8211; Placement Exam and Placement Module Instructions<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please review the details at the link above in full before moving on to the next section.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You do not need to take the CPE if you are&nbsp;<em>certain<\/em>&nbsp;you have credit for CH 101 via AP\/IB exams or transfer credit from another school, and you are sure you will not be retaking CH 101 at NC State.&nbsp;<strong>If you are at all uncertain, or are awaiting AP scores, you should take the Chemistry Placement exam as you will not be able to enroll in CH 101 until you do so.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chemistry Placement Modules<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A score of 15 or greater out of 25 total points is required on the examination to qualify for CH101.&nbsp; If a student does not meet that requirement, but scores higher than 12, then they are recommended to self-register and complete the &#8220;Chemistry Placement Modules&#8221; found at the following link: <a href=\"https:\/\/moodle-projects.wolfware.ncsu.edu\/course\/view.php?id=6617\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chemistry Placement Module Instructions<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Successful completion of the Chemistry Placement Modules and the evaluative exam can qualify the student to enroll in CH101.&nbsp; The module represents about three weeks of introductory material, so please be mindful and begin early if you intend to complete the modules to qualify to enroll in CH101.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who do not qualify via the Chemistry Placement Exam, and who also do not qualify via the Chemistry Placement Modules, are expected to enroll in CH111 in the Fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CODA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Basic facts about CODA credentials:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CODA credentials are&nbsp;<strong>ONLY<\/strong>&nbsp;used internally by the College of Engineering for your CODA application<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are&nbsp;<strong>NOT<\/strong>&nbsp;factored into your overall GPA at NC State<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are&nbsp;<strong>NOT<\/strong>&nbsp;visible on your official transcript<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Therefore, think of them as &#8220;pretend&#8221; or &#8220;stand-in&#8221; grades<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Accepted transfer course credit from another institution is shown at NC State as earned credit hours, but the grade is not included in the calculation of a student&#8217;s NC State cumulative grade point average (GPA).<em>&nbsp;In other words, letter grades earned elsewhere have no influence on your GPA at NC State.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you completed Chemistry 101\/102 through AP testing, transfer credits, or other pre-college program options, a comparable letter grade will be assigned as a CODA credential to be used when calculating your CODA GPA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comparable grades for each AP score or transfer equivalence are displayed in the column for\u00a0<strong>CODA credentials<\/strong>\u00a0in the <a href=\"https:\/\/engr.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/412\/2022\/02\/ChemistryChart_CH101.102_Spring2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">placement charts<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transfer credits for CH101 and CH102&nbsp;are shown only as credit hours, and letter grades earned elsewhere are not included in calculating your cumulative GPA at NC State. However, for the purpose of CODA and only for that purpose, the College will use the letter grade that you earned elsewhere as a CODA credential in calculating your CODA GPA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you earned a grade of B in the equivalent of CH 101 and 102 (Chemistry)&nbsp;at your community college, that grade of B will have no effect on your cumulative GPA at NC State, but that grade of B will have an effect your CODA GPA, which is based on the grades earned in your technical CODA courses (MA 141, 241, CH 101\/102, and PY 205\/206).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> <strong>When you add CH 101 &amp; 102 to your Enrollment Wizard Shopping Cart there WILL be a warning indicator&nbsp;(!)&nbsp;in the Enrollment Wizard.&nbsp;<\/strong>The exclamation point does not necessarily mean that you have not met the prerequisites to enroll in the course, but is a reminder that you must enroll in both the CH 101 lecture and the CH 102 lab.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you know that you&#8217;ve earned an appropriate score on the Chemistry Placement Exam &#8211; you will be able to enroll in CH 101 &amp; CH 102 as long as you&#8217;re adding both courses to your schedule.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All engineering degrees require the following chemistry courses: You should be enrolled in a chemistry course for the fall semester unless you already have credit for chemistry (via qualifying AP\/IB scores or college transfer credit that has been submitted to NC State Admissions).
