The Engineering Place's K-12 outreach\" width=\"500\" height=\"459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress-projects.wolfware.ncsu.edu\/nae-grand-challenges-zg7so3u\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/101\/2022\/07\/Social-Consciousness.png 738w, https:\/\/wordpress-projects.wolfware.ncsu.edu\/nae-grand-challenges-zg7so3u\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/101\/2022\/07\/Social-Consciousness-300x275.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Scholars choosing any one of the following options toward the\u00a0Social Consciousness competency\u00a0<strong>must<\/strong>\u00a0substantiate and contextualize how the course\u2019s subject matter, approach, and\/or learning objectives advanced their understanding of their chosen Grand Challenge.<\/p>\n<h3>Nonprofit Studies Minor from the Institute of Nonprofits<\/h3>\n<p>The interdisciplinary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.ncsu.edu\/undergraduate\/humanities-social-sciences\/interdisciplinary\/nonprofit-studies-minor\/\" target=\"\u201c_blank\u201d\" rel=\"noopener\">Minor in Nonprofit Studies<\/a>\u00a0is designed to prepare students for careers in the nonprofit and social sectors, in both paid and volunteer positions.<\/p>\n<h3>GEP Co-Requisites: Global Knowledge Courses<\/h3>\n<p>Requirements can be fulfilled by taking one or more of these courses which focus on ethics, diversity, inclusion, equity, systems of power, privilege, and oppression as well as how cultural exchanges lead to societal impact all\u00a0related to the Grand Challenges. Based upon their rationale and learning objectives, <a href=\"https:\/\/oucc.dasa.ncsu.edu\/courses\/general-education-program\/\" target=\"\u201c\u201d_blank\u201d\u201d\" rel=\"\u201cnoopener\u201d noopener\"> General Education Program (GEP) <\/a> courses that are designated as <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.ncsu.edu\/undergraduate\/gep-category-requirements\/gep-global-knowledge\/\" target=\"\u201c\u201d_blank\u201d\u201d\" rel=\"\u201cnoopener\u201d noopener\">Global Knowledge<\/a> are sufficient. Courses not listed must be approved at the discretion of the Scholar\u2019s GC Mentor or the GCSP.\u00a0 In cases of uncertainty, the GC Mentor should consult with the GCSP for approval.<\/p>\n<h3>E 490: Preparing for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam and Professional Licensure<\/h3>\n<p>Along with graduating with your ABET-accredited engineering or computer science degree, the first step toward professional licensure is passing the FE exam.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engr.ncsu.edu\/academics\/undergrad\/profengr\/\" target=\"\u201c\u201d_blank\u201d\u201d\" rel=\"\u201cnoopener\u201d noopener\">E 490<\/a>\u00a0is an exam prep course for seniors in engineering majors planning to take the FE exam. The licensure process is how engineers demonstrate their technical competence, ethical decision-making, and acceptance of professional responsibility for the public\u2019s safety and welfare.<\/p>\n<h3>Ethics Courses<\/h3>\n<p>Courses that teach ethical and professional responsibilities (in engineering situations but not always) and that teach Scholars how to make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts, are eligible to satisfy this competency.
