Abstracts

Summary

An abstract is a concise summary of a research article, thesis, or report. They typically provide an overview of the main objectives, methodology, key findings, and conclusions of the work. The purpose of an abstract is to give readers a quick understanding of the content of the study, helping them decide whether to read or purchase the full document. It also allows researchers to easily identify relevant studies in their field during literature reviews.

Learning Outcomes

  • Differentiate between executive abstracts and research abstracts in terms of purpose and structure.
  • Identify and evaluate the essential components of a research abstract
  • Compose a clear and concise executive abstract suitable for decision-making audiences

Executive Abstracts

Summary

An executive abstract is a concise summary of a business report, proposal, or research document aimed at executives or decision-makers. Its purpose is to provide a quick, high-level overview of the key points, conclusions, and recommendations without delving into technical details.

Unlike other types of abstracts, such as conference or research abstracts used in academic papers, the executive abstract focuses on actionable insights and strategic decisions rather than just summarizing content. It often emphasizes the “so what?”—highlighting why the information matters for the organization’s goals and decisions. It also tends to be more focused on practical outcomes than purely academic findings.

Conference and Research Abstracts

Summary

A research or conference abstract is a brief summary of a research study or presentation, typically submitted for professional conferences. Its purpose is to succinctly convey the objectives, methods, findings, and significance of the research to allow reviewers and attendees to quickly assess the relevance and quality of the work.

Compared to other types of abstracts, like executive abstracts, a research abstract is more focused on the academic or scientific contribution rather than practical business applications. It often follows a structured format—summarizing the problem, methodology, results, and conclusion. While an executive abstract targets decision-makers, research abstracts are aimed at scholars and peers, and they are typically more technical and specific.
