Chromosome Structure and Karyotypes:
DNA Wrapping, Chromosomes and Replication – video
Images of a few different karyotypes.
Is the person in the karyotype below male or female? How can you tell?
A book about the history and ethical issues surrounding the discovery and use of HeLa Cells – New York Times book review of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
HeLa Chromosome slide preparation from past students 40X total magnification
Mitosis:
Mitosis – video animation of the process – try and narrate this yourself. Important stages to understand and identify are interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase. (1:22)
Mitosis Rap – a nice annimation and explanation of mitosis, a little more detailed that what you need for lab, but may be helpful for lecture and greater understanding of the mechanics. (3:17)
Mitosis animation – to view on your own as review (6:10)
Onion Root Tip Cell Cycle – identify the stages you can see below and determine the cell cycle in lab using prepared slides.
The pie chart below was generated from a random sampling of cells in the onion root tip. Answer the following questions:
- Based on the graph below, what can you tell about this region of the onion root tip?
- Why are some phases of the cell cycle larger than others?
- Why is Interphase so much different from the stages of mitosis? What occurs during interphase?
- Why are some stages of mitosis larger than other stages of mitosis?
- How would these results be different in other areas of the plant? Why would they be different?
Mitosis and Meiosis – video showing fluid model simulation using chromosome beads (very important talking points!)
Meiosis
Meiosis animation with narration (2:24)
Meiosis – animation to view on your own as review (5:27)
Lily Anthers will produce cells that will eventually become pollen. Meiotic cells at lower magnification so you can still see the cross section of the anther.
Meiotic cells at higher magnification within the anther locuoles (below).
Can you identify the stages you can see below as either in Meiosis I or II?
You may be able to identify a few cells in PI, MI, AI, TI, PII, MII, AII, TII
Meiotic cells under higher magnification (below). Not all stages are present NOR are they in any particular order.
In what order would you put them?
Identify the stages you can see above (Meiosis I or II?, and if possible specific stages – PI, MI, AI, TI, PII, MII, AII, TII? )
