QM Workshops at NC State

Faculty and staff are eligible to take select QM workshops free of charge. Facilitated by QM-certified instructors at NC State, these workshops provide participants with foundational knowledge of high-quality course design best practices.

Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR)

APPQMR is Quality Matters’s flagship workshop on the QM Higher Education Rubric and its use in reviewing the design of online and blended courses. It is intended for a broad audience, including but not limited to faculty, instructional designers, administrators, and adjunct instructors. It is particularly helpful to those new to QM or those considering the adoption of a quality assurance process for online and blended learning. In addition to learning about the QM Rubric and the course review process, participants will learn to apply the concept of alignment and draft helpful recommendations for course improvement.

  • Prerequisite: Experience teaching or developing online and/or hybrid courses
  • Workshop Delivery: Face-to-Face (in-person or virtual synchronous) or Online Asynchronous
  • Workshop Length: 8 hours (synchronous) or 2 weeks, 8-10 hours/week (asynchronous)

Designing Your Online Course (DYOC)

The DYOC workshop includes an overview of the QM Rubric and provides a framework for participants who are new to online teaching to design an online course plan. An integral element of the workshop is exploration of the eight General Standards of the QM Rubric, focusing on learning objectives and overall course alignment. Participants will complete a Course Development Plan. The plan includes all of the essential Specific Review Standards (SRS) in the QM Rubric with a column for how the participant will meet each SRS in their course and what resources they will need.

  • Prerequisite: None. However, it is helpful if participants have worked with a course in the past or have an online course in mind that they want to design.
  • Workshop Delivery: Face-to-Face (in-person or virtual synchronous) or Online Asynchronous
  • Workshop Length: 8 hours (synchronous) or 2 weeks, 8-10 hours/week (asynchronous)
