Lab Course Format

Overview of BIO 181 Online Labs:

Course expectations: To be successful in the lab portion of Bio 181, it is important that you complete all assignments by the due date and that you are on time to the In-Lab sessions. Each part of the lab builds on the other, and you will be assessed in the lab based on your performance in each part of lab. See below for a more detailed description of each part:

Pre-Lab Includes work you will do on your own, submit on Moodle, and use during the In-Lab. It prepares you and is required for the In-Lab, and will be due by the start of your scheduled lab time.

In-Lab The interactive part of lab in which you will work in groups to use, generate, analyze, and discuss data. This part of lab generally uses your Pre-Lab assignments for data sources and as a foundation to further explore a topic. It is facilitated by your lab instructor.

Post-Lab Brings the other two parts of lab together. It allows you to apply what you learned in the Pre-Lab and In-Lab by making inferences and synthesizing your work. It requires successful completion of the Pre-Lab and the In-Lab assignments/activities. Most weeks, you will be asked to submit your “Post-Lab work” to demonstrate your understanding and/or to apply your knowledge of the lab topic(s). It is individual work, but can build on group activities. Post-Lab assignments will be due within 48 hours of the scheduled lab start time. For example, if your lab is scheduled to meet at 8:30 am on Mondays, you will have until 8:30 am on Wednesdays to complete any Post-Lab assignments.

Other AssignmentsThere are other assignments that may span several lab units or the semester as a whole. These include an experimental design project, a library tutorial, a lab report, etc. These are individual assignments.
