All engineering degrees require two physics courses with labs (PY 205 and PY 208), but only the first physics course (PY 205) is required for CODA:
- PY 205 – Physics for Engineers and Scientists I Lecture & Laboratory (4 credits)
You should be enrolled in PY 205 for the fall semester, only if you have credit for Calculus I, MA 141 (via qualifying AP scores or college transfer credit that has been submitted to NC State Admissions) and preferably have completed CH 101 and 102.
Physics 208
Physics for Engineers and Scientists II is taken after completion of Physics I (PY 205) and Calculus II (MA 241). It is not a CODA requirement, but it is a requirement for all College of Engineering degrees, and is a pre-requisite for certain sophomore-level engineering courses.
- PY 208 – Physics for Engineers and Scientists II Lecture & Laboratory (4 credits)
CODA
Basic facts about CODA credentials:
- CODA credentials are ONLY used internally by the College of Engineering for your CODA application
- They are NOT factored into your overall GPA at NC State
- They are NOT visible on your official transcript
- Therefore, think of them as “pretend” or “stand-in” grades
Transfer Credit
Transfer credit accepted from another institution is shown at NC State as earned credit hours, but the grade earned is not included in the computation of a student’s NC State cumulative grade point average (GPA). In other words, letter grades earned elsewhere have no influence on your cumulative GPA at NC State.
However, if you have completed PY 205 through Advanced Placement (AP) testing, transfer credits, or other pre-college program options, a comparable letter grade will be assigned as a CODA credential to be used when calculating your CODA GPA.
Comparable grades for each score or transfer equivalence are displayed in the column for CODA credentials in the Physics Placement Chart.
For example, if you earned a grade of B in the equivalent of PY 205 at your community college, that grade of B will have no effect on your cumulative GPA at NC State, but that grade of B will have an effect your CODA GPA, which is based on the grades earned in your technical CODA courses (MA 141, MA 241, CH 101/102 and PY 205).
